FIFA 21's next-gen upgrade is already available

An early kick-off.

The next-gen upgrade for FIFA 21 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S has been released early by Electronic Arts.

The upgrade was expected to arrive tomorrow alongside the next-gen version’s release, but EA appears to have given all owners of the current-gen version (who also happen to own a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S) an early treat.

The next-gen upgrade allows anyone who owns the PS4 or Xbox One versions of FIFA 21 to upgrade their copy to the respective next-generation version. To redeem the upgrade, you’ll need to log in on the next-gen console and head to our game library. In here, you ought to see an icon highlighting the next-gen version which should take you to a free purchase page.

The next-gen version of FIFA 21 promises several improvements to the look and style of the game. Along with the expected enhancements to player models, the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions include extra animations for players, improved lighting, more animated crowds, and, in the case of the PS5, special DualSense controller features.

Unfortunately for those who’ve made a lot of progress already in FIFA 21, the only data that’ll be carried over to the new version is Volta and Ultimate Team progress. Everything else will require you to start from square one. The full next-gen release arrives tomorrow, meaning you’ve got several hours to enjoy the shiny new graphics ahead of the bulk of PS5 and Xbox Series X owners.
