To deepen your relationships with your companions and increase your friendship levels with them, you will need to gain companionship experience. If you earn enough companionship experience with a character, your friendship level with them will increase. There are a few different ways to earn companionship experience, but one of the best ways will require you to get your Adventure Rank up high enough to unlock Daily Commissions.

Completing these Daily Commissions, along with running various dungeons and random events that spawn on the open world map will get you some companionship experience. To check if a quest will dole out companionship experience, you can go to the menu to double check each quest's rewards.

As of Update 1.6 in Genshin Impact, friendship can now be earned passively for characters you have unlocked but might not use in your daily teams (sorry Amber). To earn passive Friendship levels and Companion EXP, go into your Serenitea Pot (unlocked at Adventure Rank 35) and you'll be able to place them like furniture objects around your little home. Companions placed like this will earn between 2 and 5 Companion EXP per hour, tied to your highest Adeptal Energy level (so make sure you place plenty of furniture too!).

Every character in Genshin Impact has their own friendship levels, so to max each one out you will need to run dungeons and Commissions several times, but putting them in your Serenitea Pot could help with passive earning. Though currently maxing out friendship levels is just a way to better get to know your party members, Genshin Impact is very much a living game, so who knows what changes may come? Grinding out those levels might just have a benefit down the road, beyond the lovely little themed namecard you'll receive once reaching level 10 with each character.
