How Concentration works in Baldur's Gate 3

If you want to cast spells, you'll need to FOCUS.

Dungeons and Dragons inspired RPG Baldur's Gate 3 is out now in early access and there are plenty of characters with incredible abilities to choose from to create your perfect adventuring party. But some of these fantastic abilities require more than a simple cast or activation. These abilities require a character to concentrate completely on it, and if that concentration is broken, so is the spell. But don't worry, this guide will cover everything you need to know about Concentration so you can deal out the real damage flawlessly.

Concentration will mostly impact your mage characters, but some other classes who can do minor spellwork like Rangers also have some abilities that require it. For example, the Ranger ability Hunter's Mark requires your Ranger to Concentrate to maintain it. Same for a Wizard trying to cast a large area of effect spell that lingers.

To see if a spell requires Concentration to use, just hover your cursor over the spell in question. If it does indeed need all of your spellcaster's focus, "Concentration: Required" will appear above the spell's range. You can also see how long the spell's effect will last if you hover over the effect. A timer will display the effect's length to the left. Once the spell is cast, an outline of its icon will appear above the casting character's avatar icon and the spell will stay active and in place so long as the character's concentration is unwavering.

Spells/abilities that require Concentration will only stay active as long as the casting character stays completely focused on maintaining it. If their Concentration is broken, the spell will go as well and will have to be reapplied. To protect any characters you have using Concentration-centric spells, make sure you keep them out of the action while using them. If they're damaged while casting a spell key to your strategy, it could be disastrous.
