We're getting a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

It's coming back, but not in the way many fans would have wanted.

Prior to today’s Ubisoft Forward, rumors were circulating about the return of the Prince of Persia series. The rumors have been given a shred of truth to them as Ubisoft officially announced a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

It’s not a “new” Prince of Persia game, but it’s something. It’s definitely something. During today’s Ubisoft Forward, a trailer was shown for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a remake of the 2003 original set to release on January 21, 2021.

The original game is a timeless classic beloved by many. Sadly, the reception to the remake news has been more “mixed” than positive. Prince of Persia fans are happy to hear that Sands of Time is getting the remake treatment, but aren’t on board for the graphics and visuals shown in the trailer.

From what we can see in the trailer, the remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is definitely not on the level of the Final Fantasy 7 remake, or even Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remastered. We also get a cryptic teaser in the description that accompanies the announcement trailer: “...the first full-scale remake of Prince of Persia by Ubisoft.”

It sounds like Ubisoft plans to remake other Prince of Persia titles. That, or they have a brand new Prince of Persia title that isn’t ready to be announced just yet. Earlier this year, people discovered an old clip of a cancelled Prince of Persia reboot called Prince of Persia: Redemption that was uploaded to YouTube back in 2012.

Many were sad at the fact that Ubisoft never released that game. With the Sands of Time remake announcement, fans have returned to the 2012 trailer to lament over what could have been had Prince of Persia: Redemption been released instead of cancelled.

Given the return of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, it’s possible that if enough people call for it, Ubisoft may take another look at Prince of Persia: Redemption. Especially if the Sands of Time remake doesn’t perform as well as expected.

Either way, we’re glad to see the dust shaken off the Prince of Persia series and we’re curious to see additional trailers for the Sands of Time remake in the future. Perhaps the trailer didn’t showcase the game as well as it could have? Only time will tell.

After watching the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake trailer, what are your thoughts? Are you disappointed about the graphics? Were you hoping Ubisoft would revisit Prince of Persia: Redemption, or announce a brand new game? Comment below!
