Monster Hunter World ships 5m copies in opening weekend

Monstrous sales for the beast-slaying series.

Monster Hunter World has had a behemoth opening weekend shipping more than 5 million copies worldwide.

The game’s simultaneous worldwide release, a first for the series which typically focuses on the home Japanese audience, has led to it becoming the fastest selling entry into the franchise.

Monster Hunter World is also the first time the series has arrived on Xbox, opening the console market to an entirely new audience as well as PlayStation 4 – the first full-fledged PlayStation release in 12 years.

However in its opening few days, the online features of the game have been mostly unusable on Microsoft’s console, though Capcom insists this is due to high volume of users and will be fixed shortly.
