Mortal Shell has no manual save system built in. You’ll pick between three save slots when you start up the game, but from then on you’ll be reliant on an auto-save mechanic. If you’re worried about losing progress, then the trick is to learn which actions trigger an auto-save in Mortal Shell.

The most simple method is to hit escape and select “Exit to Main Menu.” This will trigger a save state and return you to the main menu, ensure you can pick up from where you left off. Thankfully, the game does save in other areas too, just in case you run into a crash or two; this is a beta, after all. Each death in Mortal Shell also triggers an auto-save, though you’ll need to wait until you’ve respawned at a checkpoint for it to occur. You’ll also auto-save each time you enter a new area of the map and hit a checkpoint.

Should you close the game without using the “Exit to Main Menu” function then you’ll find you’re thrown back to one of these checkpoints the next time you boot the game up.Mortal Shell’s auto-save regularity is pretty generous, and we haven’t found many problems with losing progress in our time with the beta. That’s good news given how challenging it can be to progress. That’s all there is to know about how to save in Mortal Shell, but if you discover any other tricks to the system then be sure to share them with us in the comments section below.
