The first summer update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons bring swimming into the game, but if you want to explore the waters beyond your shores, you’ll need the right equipment. In this guide we’ll explain how to get a wetsuit and go swimming in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It won’t take you long, once you learn how to swim you can collect all manner of new sea creatures.
How to get a wetsuit in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Before you can swim in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you need to get a wetsuit. The easiest way to do this is to head to Nook’s Cranny. Visit the store cupboard inside the shop and you’ll find a wetsuit has been added to the items on the first page (with all the tools and recipes). Select this to have Timmy & Tommy tell you about how swimming works in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. They’ll explain how to get into the sea and the controls once you’re in there.

You can also purchase an arguably more stylish wetsuit from the Nook Shopping App or a Nook Miles Kiosk. Ours was selling the leaf pattern you see above. However, bear in mind that this will take a day to arrive, meaning you can’t use it to swim in the sea immediately unless someone else splashes out and orders one from their catalogue as a gift for you.
How to swim in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Once you have your wetsuit, you need to put it on before you can swim in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If you’re dressed appropriately – a snorkel isn’t necessary but it completes the look – you can head to the beach or any edge of your island and press A to jump into the water.
Once you’re in the water (don’t worry, it’s warmer than you’d think), the controls for how to swim in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are very simple. You can move around slowly with the left analog stick, or press A to swim more quickly. To dive you just need to press the Y button. This will allow you to swim underwater for a short while, collecting any strange creatures you pass on the seafloor. You can still press A while underwater to swim faster. You’ll surface after a short time, or you can press Y again to return immediately.
