Get ready to dive in as Animal Crossing's summer update opens the sea

New otterly adorable encounters await as Animal Crossing: New Horizons' first summer update lets you swim in the ocean.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons' first summer update arrives on July 3, allowing you to dive into the sea to escape the heat and find new friends.

The update, free to all dedicated villagers, will let you jump into the ocean and swim out to dive for sea creatures that dwell on the sandy bottom.

Wearing a fetching stripey wetsuit will let you dive in and pick up shellfish, anemones and starfish from the sea floor, which you can then donate to Blathers to top up your increasingly vibrant aquarium tanks.

However if you find a particularly tasty looking scallop, a new otter friend called Pascal will swim over to ask if he can have it for a snack. If you agree he'll leave a present for you, including DIY recipes to make the perfect underwater-themed room in your house. Mermaid items and shimmery shell furniture look beautiful and cool to sit on in these hot and sticky summer nights.

Pascal isn't the only new friend either – or is he? It appears that constant castaway Gulliver is indulging in some summer-themed cosplay as he now washes up on your beach as a shipwrecked pirate. Gully can't fool us though, but it's not clear if he'll have any new items to share with us from his travels for helping fix his phone. We'll have to wait and see what he has in stock when the first free summer update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons arrives on July 3.

That isn't all though, as a second free summer update titled Wave 2 will follow in early August. What new friends will we find to beat the heat then?

You can download the Free Summer Update Wave 1 for Animal Crossing: New Horizons on July 3 and hide away from the scorching sun inside for a bit longer.
