Our first look at the gameplay for Deathloop was shown during tonight’s PlayStation 5 Future of Gaming broadcast, showcasing a battle between assassins.
Developed by Arkane Studios, there’s a very clear Dishonored influence in the footage shown, with slides, teleports and stabbings taken straight out of Corvo’s playbook of deadly skills. Check it out below:
For those who missed last year’s reveal, Deathloop follows two assassins stuck in a time loop in a shady city known as Blackreef. Rather than work together to solve this quandary, they’ve decided instead to spend their endless our killing each other over and over and over using a variety of guns, knives, and deadly traps. Lovely stuff.
One character has a list of targets they need to kill by the end of the night, and should they fail then the loop starts all over again. The other, a lady named Juliana, seems intent on stopping this from ever occurring, and according to details from Arkane, this is an immersive multiplayer component which can be toggled off if you don't want to play against someone else.
"You’ll experience Deathloop’s main story as Colt, hunting down targets across the island as you try to break the loop," Arkane explain in the PlayStation Blog post. "Meanwhile, another player might temporarily enter your story in the role of Julianna, a rival assassin with her own singular goal: Protect the loop by eliminating Colt. Of course, if you’re feeling particularly villainous, you can slip into the shoes of Julianna yourself, jumping into someone else’s Blackreef for a tense game of cat-and-mouse."
It looks like we’ll have to build up from stealthy kills to rampant, all out action at the end of each run as we race to kill all the targets before Juliana gets to us. Deathloop will be a timed exclusive console release on PS5 when it arrives this holiday 2020, though it will also launch on PC.
