Whenever we rummage through old stuff in our cupboards, we inevitably find ourselves wondering what the heck half the items are or when we even got them. It appears island villagers do the same, as Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ ‘What was this again?’ item shows. If you’ve found this unknown item in your backpack or storage, we’ll explain where it came from below.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ ‘What was this again?’ item
The ‘What was this again?’ item in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is actually a Lost Item. Normally when you find these you would aim to give them back to the villager who dropped them. However, people in the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons are apparently very short of memory. If you don’t give the item back on the same day, then you’ll find it has transformed into the ‘What was this again?’ unknown object.
If you forget about the Lost Item and this happens then you can no longer return it to its owner. There’s nothing more you can do with the object, so feel free to toss it in the communal recycling in Resident’s Services. Don’t worry, it may have been the prized possession of a certain someone, but they won’t judge you for tossing it away. Apparently notebooks and bags become useless after a day of unknown ownership.
When you do find a Lost Item in future, remember to Investigate it in your inventory to get a clue as to who it belongs to. If you’re still not sure then take it to any villager on your island and show it to them. They’ll point you in the direction of the rightful owner. Returning Lost Items is not only a nice thing to do, it’ll also result in some handy rewards from your villagers. You scratch their back, and they’ll give you a random item or piece of clothing. It’s a bit weird, but it works.
