How to catch a Rainbow Stag in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The Rainbow Stag is an extremely jumpy little beetle.

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, several new bugs were added to the Northern Hemisphere in June including the Rainbow Stag. If you’re lucky enough to spot one before it flies away, you may have difficulty getting close enough to catch it. To help make things easier, we’ve put together a guide explaining how to catch a Rainbow Stag in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Several new bugs were added to Animal Crossing: New Horizons including the Rainbow Stag. As of June 1, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players in the Northern Hemisphere have the ability to catch the Rainbow Stag. To do this, they’ll need to keep in mind that the Rainbow Stag is only available from 7 p.m. until 8 a.m. on the sides of tree trunks.

The Rainbow Stag is similar to the Atlas Moth in that it’s very, very jumpy. If you approach it too fast, or approach from the wrong angle, you risk scaring it away. To catch the Rainbow Stag, you’ll need to treat it like the Atlas Moth. Unfortunately, unlike the Atlas Moth, the Rainbow Stag is much smaller and its color helps it blend with the tree trunk.

They can be hard to spot from a far enough distance away to ready yourself, especially at night. If you’re in a grove of trees, we recommend walking slowly, do not run. If you spot the Rainbow Stag, move back, then circle around to approach it from the front. With your net, hold the A button to slowly creep forward.

Keep holding A, then release when you’re close enough to catch the Rainbow Stag. It can take a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be catching dozens of these bad boys in no time. If you aren’t getting Rainbow Stags on your island, you can go on a Mystery Island Tour.

When you turn your island into a “Scorpion Island” you’ll see both Rainbow Stags and Goliath Beetles spawn like crazy on the trunks of coconut trees. It’s helpful seeing them on coconut trees as Rainbow Stags don’t blend with the lighter wood like they do the wood of a fruit tree for example.

The incentive to catching these jumpy beetles is their value, with Rainbow Stags selling for 6,000 Bells each. Don’t forget to give your first one to Blathers, though! To recap, the Rainbow Stag can be found on the sides of tree trunks from 7 p.m. until 8 a.m. in the Northern Hemisphere of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
