We’ll explain the finer details below, but first here are the key details you need to know for how to catch Whale Sharks in Animal Crossing: New Horizons:

  • When: All Day, June - September
  • Where: Sea
  • Shadow Size: Massive (with dorsal fin)
  • Value: 13,000 Bells

To catch a Whale Shark in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you need to be fishing in the sea from the months of June to September in the northern hemisphere (that’s December to March in the southern hemisphere). Whale Sharks appear as massive shadows that are easily separated from regular fish thanks to the dorsal fins that protrude from their backs. You can see what a fin looks like in the image below.

If you only catch fish with fins, you’ll likely pick up a range of different (and valuable) sharks and even a few suckerfish too. We recommend crafting a large amount of fish bait or waiting for a rainy day before trying to catch a big haul of sharks. You can also try to head out on Nook Miles trips to reach a shark-filled island. In case you didn’t know, Whale Sharks are the largest species of fish, but they’re entirely harmless to humans and most other animals. They filter feed and young ones have even been known to play with divers.
