Why Monster Hunter World isn't on Switch

Hardware decisions were made too long ago, says Capcom.

Monster Hunter World isn't currently planned for Nintendo Switch, developers Kaname Fujioka and Yuyu Tokuda have said in an interview, despite the console's huge success.

"We don't have any plans for the Switch at the moment," the developers said in an interview with IGN. (It's not clear whether Fujioka or Tokuda was speaking at the time as the interview has no attributions for the answers.)

"Part of the reason is that the title has been in development for almost four years. At the time we had to commit to our hardware choices, we decided on using the most powerful current generation consoles available at the time, which was PlayStation 4 and Xbox One."

Whether Monster Hunter World could work on Nintendo Switch remains an open question. Nintendo's console is less powerful than PS4 and Xbox One, and while some current-gen games have been ported successfully, notably Doom, it has usually required compromises to get something playable on the screen.

Our guess is that we won't see World on Switch any time soon, but Capcom will probably consider adding Nintendo back into the mix for future games if the Switch's sales success continues unabated.

Monster Hunter World is due out on PS4 and Xbox One this Friday, January 26.
