The quick answer to the question of whether you can get Star Fragment Trees in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is technically yes, but ultimately no.

To explain, the image going around social media featuring Star Fragment Trees is from a player who hacked the game and modded the trees to specifically grow that way. Hypothetically, if you were to hack the game in a similar fashion you could get Star Fragment Trees in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

If you’re looking for a legitimate method beyond hacking, the bad news is that there’s currently no other way to get these trees.

If you bury a Star Fragment, you won’t get a Star Fragment Tree from it. You can’t get these trees from Leif or Celeste, they won’t randomly start growing on your island, the only way like we said is via hacking. With that in mind, it’s possible that Nintendo may expand upon the ways in which you can get Star Fragments in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Rather than scanning the night sky for shooting stars, Nintendo may implement something like these Star Fragment Trees. In a way, they feel reminiscent of the Money Trees where you’ll see a glowing spot on the ground and when you dig it up, you’ll receive a bag of Bells. If you bury that bag back in the spot you dug it up, it’ll grow into a tree that yields even more Bells.

Alternatively, Nintendo could add Star Fragment Trees as a decorative piece rather than a functional one. They certainly look beautiful, and we know several fellow Animal Crossing: New Horizons players who’d love to have a few on their island regardless of whether or not they’re functional.

Our recommendation is to check back to see if Nintendo adds an official way to get Star Fragment Trees or something similar. Until then, the breakdown here is that there’s currently no way to get Star Fragment Trees in Animal Crossing: New Horizons outside of hacking.
