GTA 5 available for free on Epic Games Store

The announcement bricked the store.

The Epic Games Store offers free games every month as a way to attract gamers to the platform. Most of the free games have been indies, some recognizable, and others a bit more obscure. This week changes everything because yes, you can grab a free copy of Grand Theft Auto V from the Epic Games Store. We’re serious.

Grand Theft Auto V is available for free on the Epic Games Store starting today, May 14 at 11:00 a.m. (ET). After the game went live, gamers rushed to grab their free copy, even those who aren't the biggest fans of the EGS. The traffic was so intense, it bricked the store.

For many, the Epic Games Store won’t load at all right now. All you’re able to view is an error message. For others, you can access the Epic Games Store but the section where you’d normally be able to download free games is missing. When you search for Grand Theft Auto V on its own, you’re likewise unable to find it.

Essentially, you may want to wait until tomorrow or the weekend to download your free copy of GTA 5 on the Epic Games Store. You know, after the chaos dies down a little.

The free games offered by the Epic Games Store have primarily been smaller indie titles, so it’s a bit surprising to see a game as big as GTA 5 available for free. Although, the full 'surprise' of it was spoiled when Epic accidentally leaked the info on Twitter on May 12, a few days earlier than intended.

They quickly deleted the tweet, but the cat was already out of the bag at that point.

With a game like GTA 5 available for free on the Epic Games Store, we have to wonder what else Epic has up their sleeve. Will we see more AAA games in their rotation of free games, or is this a one-off thing? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments below!
