If someone told us to catch Barreleye, we’d assume they were insulting us with a rare disease. Fortunately in the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, this uncommon fish is just another addition to your museum, or even your bell balance. To start, here are the key characteristics you need to know to catch a Barreleye in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

  • When: 9pm - 4am, All Year
  • Where: Sea
  • Shadow Size: Small
  • Value: 15,000 Bells

As noted above, the key to catching the Barreleye in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is to go fishing between 9pm and 4am. For most of us, those are pretty restrictive hours, but we’ve found taking island tours with a Nook Miles Ticket after 9pm to be the best method of securing a Barreley. Fish spawn much more quickly on island tours, and if you get one that’s raining then your odds are even better.

The other key to catching a Barreleye is that it has a small (not tiny) fish shadow. While most of the rare fish are big boys, the Barreleye is a small fella, waiting in the deep for you to grab him. The good news is that you have all year to find and catch Barreleye in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so there’s no real need to rush. If you do catch one, naturally we recommend giving it to Blathers, but any beyond that will be worth a whopping 15,000 bells when sold to Timmy and Tommy, or even more if you save it for C.J.
