Sony reveals PlayStation Studios, a new umbrella for first-party titles

The PS Studios logo animation is giving off serious Marvel vibes.

Sony has unveiled PlayStation Studios, a new brand name to house future first-party PlayStation titles.

While we’re still waiting for firmer details about the PlayStation 5 itself, Sony fans have something to pay attention to today thanks to the reveal of the PlayStation Studios animation which will play on startup for all first-party titles. Eerily similar in style to the Xbox Game Studios animation revealed nearly a year ago, the PS Studios animation has all gone a bit Marvel. Take a look below to see what we mean.

Closeups of rotating circle, square, cross - definitely not X - and triangle icons reveal faces of characters from PlayStation exclusives. Showing glimpses of Kratos, Nathan Drake, Aloy and Ellie, it all feels very PS4 centric, though given we know very little about the games coming to PS5 right now, that’s not all-too surprising.

Story-driven, exclusive titles were a huge draw for the PS4 in the current generation, so it’s likely Sony will be trying to indicate that this trend will continue into the PS5’s life. Still, it’ll be a bit strange to see so much PS4 imagery appear each time we boot up future PS5 titles.

The PlayStation Studios brand will officially launch alongside the PS5 in the latter half of the year. The new logo animation will be featured on any games developed or managed by Sony’s Worldwide Studios. According to Sony there will also be several different versions of the animation, for use in trailers and other promotions.

Speaking with Gamesindustry.biz, Sony Interactive Entertainment senior vice president and head of global marketing, Eric Lempel, said that “this is a good way to let consumers know that, if they see it, then the quality games they've come to expect from us are here. And this brand will exist for well-known existing franchises, as well as brand new franchises that we have yet to explore."

According to Sony, the PlayStation Studio branding will be applied to their PS4 titles as well, but it won’t be ready in time for either The Last of Us: Part 2 or Ghost of Tsushima’s summer releases. In addition, while it won’t arrive in time for Horizon Zero Dawn’s PC release, it will be included on any future releases on other platforms.
