Tetris 99’s next cup event brings an Animal Crossing: New Horizons theme to the online block-stacking battle royale.
Running from this Friday, May 15 until Monday, May 18, the Tetris 99 13th Maximus Cup offers up a special (and expectedly adorable) Animal Crossing: New Horizons theme to collect. Mr Nook himself features, and we’re happy to report that delightful dodo Wilbur from Dodo Airlines is also present. All is well with the world.

As with all previous cup crossovers, to get the Animal Crossing: New Horizons theme for Tetris 99, all you need to do is play from May 15 to May 18 and rack up a total of 100 points.
That should be achievable for most players given you score 100 points for a win, 50 for second place, 30 for third place, 20 for 4th-10th, and finally 10 points for 10-50. Put simply, if you can comfortably stay alive into the top 50 players in a match, it’ll only take you around ten games to earn the 100 points needed to get the Animal Crossing: New Horizons theme for Tetris 99. The event starts at 12am PT on Friday, running until 12pm PT on the Monday, so make sure you don't miss your chance to collect it.
As for the theme itself, the background features the faces of a range of villagers and characters including Raymond, Flick, and Coco. You’ll need to look close to spot if your favorite is there, but you really ought to be focussing on the Tetris match itself. Here’s a sneak peak courtesy of the Japanese Nintendo Twitter account.

Each color and shape of block is represented by fruit, fish, bugs, and fossils, and any time you clear a line you’ll get to enjoy the item presentation noise as well. Now that’s satisfaction.
Our favorite feature of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons theme is the fact that the music shifts from morning tunes to daytime and even evening as the number of players dwindles. If you enjoy those afternoon/evening themes, you’d best make sure your Tetris skills are up to scratch! Speaking of which, it’s about time we got back to block-dropping practice.
