Can you sell fake art in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Duped by Redd? Here's what you can do with your new piece of fake art in Animal Crossing: New Horizons!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons players have been carefully analyzing the items sold by Redd in order to avoid purchasing fake art. As thorough as you might be as you look at Redd’s collection of art, it’s not uncommon to make a mistake and end up with a piece of fake art in your inventory that you can’t seem to get rid of. All of this leads us to the question of whether you can sell fake art in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The quick answer is no, you can’t sell fake art in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Blathers won’t accept forgeries in his prestigious museum, and our boys Timmy and Tommy at Nook’s Cranny won’t purchase fake either. It looks like you’ve been duped by your ‘Cousin’ Redd and are now stuck with the fake art you bought from him.

Fortunately, this doesn't have to be the case as there are a few options available to you when it comes to making use of – or getting rid of – fake art in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. First, you’re free to use the fake art you purchase however you like. For example, we purchased a fake Warrior Statue and liked the way it looked so much that we set it up as a display in our makeshift Japanese theme park.

You can also take all of the fake art you've bought and set up your very own art museum right next to the one run by Blathers. If he won't take these unofficial masterpieces, he shouldn't mind a bit of friendly competition, right? The fake museum option is especially useful as it gives you a dedicated spot for all of your fake art, rather than having to fit it into your home or other areas on your island.

You won't like all of the fake art you buy, though. If you bought a truly ugly piece of art that you'd be embarassed to display, you'll naturally want to dispose of it as quickly as possible. Below, we've listed some of the ways you can get rid of your fake art once and for all.

  • Abandon fake art on Mystery Islands.
  • Throw fake art away in a trash can.
  • Place fake art into the Recycling Bin.

If you go on nightly Mystery Island runs to farm for resources, simply bring your fake art with you. Once you’ve landed on the Mystery Island, you can dump your fake art on the beach and leave it there when you fly back home. It’s a little shady to leave your trash on random islands but at least you’ve rid yourself of that tacky fake art forever.

Alternatively, you can place your fake art into a trash can or head to the Resident Services Center and put your fake art into the Recycling Bin. The fake art will stay in the Recycling Bin for a while, letting you change your mind and pick it back up if you decide you want to use it for something like the fake museum example we mentioned.

Note that once the Recycling Bin fills up completely, it’ll be emptied and your fake art will be gone forever. Whether you dump your fake art on a Mystery Island, toss it into a trash can, or leave it to collect dust in your Recycling Bin, the good news is you won’t be stuck with a piece of ‘Bold and Brash’ fake art forever in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
